What is vaginal atrophy?
As estrogen production decreases during your perimenopausal and postmenopausal years, it’s common to experience vaginal atrophy.
Vaginal and vulval atrophy describes the weakening, drying, thinning, and inflammation of the vulval and vaginal tissues. These changes lead to decreases in vaginal lubrication, painful intercourse, and urinary incontinence (involuntary leakage).
Additional signs of vaginal atrophy include:
- Burning with urination
- Changes in vaginal discharge
- Increased urinary tract infection
- Vaginal or genital itching or burning
- Light bleeding after sexual intercourse
Vaginal atrophy can negatively impact your quality of life and affect your relationships, but Dr. Khalil offers SeleneTouch therapy to provide relief.
What is SeleneTouch?
SeleneTouch is a gentle laser therapy designed to restore your vaginal health with micro-ablative energy.
When controlled and uniform amounts of SeleneTouch’s laser energy distribute to the vaginal tissue, they create microscopic tears. This laser triggers your body’s natural regeneration process and prompts the production of collagen, elastin, and vaginal mucosa in the area.
Collagen and elastin are two vital proteins responsible for your skin’s elasticity. Vaginal mucosa adds moisture and lubrication to your vagina. As collagen production, elastin, and thicker vaginal mucosa increase, your vaginal health returns and symptoms subside.
In addition to vaginal atrophy, SeleneTouch also safely treats other vaginal issues due to childbirth, certain medications, and cancer treatments.
What can I expect during SeleneTouch laser therapy?
SeleneTouch is a minimally invasive and painless procedure that takes place on-site at Women’s Medical Connection.
During your appointment, Dr. Khalil inserts a thin probe into your vagina to deliver SeleneTouch’s targeted therapy. As the laser energy targets your tissue, your vaginal walls contract. This process strengthens your vaginal tissue.
Your SeleneTouch session lasts approximately five minutes. There’s no recovery time with SeleneTouch laser therapy, although you should avoid sexual intercourse for a few days as well as strenuous physical activities like weightlifting.
For maximum results, Dr. Khalil usually recommends a minimum of three SeleneTouch treatments. Once you reach optimal vaginal health, annual maintenance sessions might be a recommendation.
